Hair loss is an increasing problem – literally. Many suffer from it but are hesitant to acknowledge and address it. Entrepreneur Cem Arel aims to change that.
“I saw a great need for assistance throughout the entire journey – from the initial considerations of a hair transplant to making the decision and handling aftercare,” he says.
Every year, 1.8 million people worldwide undergo hair transplants, with about 80% of them being men and 20% women.
“Oddly, hair loss is often a bit of a taboo subject in Sweden. This is hard to understand because it’s perfectly normal to talk about it in most other countries,” says Cem Arel, entrepreneur and founder of the new Hair Back App, where you can simulate your own hair transplant and get help with everything related to hair loss.
Cem Arel has been an entrepreneur for most of his life. At 15, he started a radio station in his father’s homeland, Turkey, to get a press pass and gain access to discos to meet girls. Since then, he has launched a variety of innovative companies and ideas in Sweden, including a software company and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“A few years ago, I became interested in hair transplants and realized there was a great need to understand the process and see the results before making a decision. I also saw how crucial aftercare was for a successful transplant. So, I thought it must be possible to make this easier for patients,” says Cem Arel.
Before and After Simulation
This led to the development of the Hair Back App, which uses AI to realistically simulate your own hair transplant. The app also offers expert advice, a forum for discussions, and support throughout the aftercare process.
“Most people who suffer from hair loss appreciate being able to see step-by-step how they will look after a transplant. This makes it easier to make a decision and better prepares you for the change. You can also show the images and discuss the matter with your loved ones.”
The app is completely free, as is the advice and forum. Hair Back makes money by referring customers who want to undergo transplants.
“Of the 1.8 million annual hair transplants, more than half – one million – are performed in Turkey. That’s where the best expertise and broadest experience are found. This means many specialists can more easily combine and tailor the right team for each patient,” says Cem Arel.
A Healthy Lifestyle Can Slow Down Hair Loss
Hair loss is 60-70% hereditary. The remaining 30-40% can be related to factors like stress, sleep, diet, and mental imbalance. Cem Arel wishes he had been more aware of these factors earlier, as he began losing hair at 27.
“If I had been more aware that stress, sleep, and diet affect hair loss, I might have been able to slow the process. But since I also have genetic hair loss, I soon became quite bald.”
“Many wonder why I haven’t had a hair transplant myself, considering I work in the field. Of course, I’ve thought about it and have done simulations to see how I would look. It looks good, but the fact is both my wife and I think I look okay as I am. So, for now, I’m content with helping others,” he says.
